Take Action
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) investigated the City
of Albuquerque animal shelter in 2000 and found appalling treatment of the
animals. Six years later, after 2 years of repeated demands by Marcy Britton,
and multiple delaying tactics by the City, HSUS returned with a team of 5
specialists, spending 4 days evaluating all aspects of shelter operations and
animal care. Their findings were released in a
166 page report, and they
are shocking. Despite an over $9 million per year budget (doubled over the last
4 years), the report outlines multiple instances of incompetence and neglect
verging on cruelty:
“On numerous occasions, ill and clearly suffering animals were not reported by
kennel staff to the veterinary staff and were simply left to suffer” Page 48-50
“An older sick cat with a note, “Please give wet food only” was found with only
dry food available amidst her vomit of partially digested food”. Page 48

The Mayor has repeatedly promised to fix the animal shelter.
So why has so little changed? This is an issue of political will and inept
management, not a lack of money. Please, email the Mayor. Tell him you
want real change, now. And don’t be fooled if he emails you
back, “I share your concerns and we are moving to fix them”. Our volunteers continue to witness much of what HSUS found in July.
The litany of suffering and neglect will continue until enough
citizens say “Stop!” You can make a difference! PLEASE—contact
the mayor and tell him to create a humane shelter!
Ask everyone you know to do the same.
500 lost, lonely, neglected animals are suffering at our
shelter tonight. It doesn’t have to be that way! Will you speak in their
defense?

STYLE TIPS
-
When you call, write, or email: be polite. It is
easier to dismiss an appeal with an angry or aggressive tone than it is to
dismiss one that is written in a calm and collected manner.
-
Try to be as clear as possible and try to reference
specific
findings from the HSUS report.
